Movie: Pi

Pi is a sundance movie from 1998 and is filmed in black and white. Directed by Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream), the main story follows Max Cohen and his attempt to try and figure out the stock market, via figuring out a pattern in the numbers. In the midst, he gets caught up with religious and financial leaders who also want to find the pattern, for different reasons. Throughout the movie, Max has hallucinations, and there is a very thin line between reality and fiction. Great psychological thriller type movie with some really great cinematography that really help portray Max's paranoia and tension.

Instinct of Survival - North of Nowhere

Instinct of survival is a crusty punk band from Hamburg Germany. First introduced to me by a friend, I was blown away when I heard this album. North of Nowhere is an amazing album. The intro turns from a melodic progression into a ripping crusty sound. Great mix of melodic element with crusty d-beat riffs. Definitely the best album I have heard from them thus far. As with all bands on this page, if you like the music, support the bands and buy merch and such.

From Ashes Rise / Victims 12"

What can I say about this? It's an amazing split from two awesome bands. From Ashes Rise comes from Nashville, Tennessee and has a fantastic mix of hardcore with some more melodic parts thrown in. Vocals are tight and high energy. On the other side, you have Victims, bringing you some straight thrashy D-beat with vocals belted out powerfully. The sound of bass really stands out to me on this one, rarely do I hear bass this powerful sounding; not in the sense of what is being played, but the general sounds it makes. One of my favorite splits by far.

Defiance Ohio / One Reason Split 7"

Two awesome songs from each band. Defiance, Ohio is a well known folk punk band from Ohio. Their band consists of violin, guitar, upright bass, drums and banjo, and sounds like a good time, if that makes sense. The songs are about wanting to be on the road  instead of seeing friends move away and being too hard one yourself for not living up to your own expectations. It reminds me of seeing a live show in a basement, which is really where they shine. On the other side you have One Reason. A band I had never heard of until picking up this split, I was pleasantly surprised. One Reason hails from Cleveland, Mississippi. Some good catchy tunes with thoughts on unity, remembering your past, and waiting until it gets warm so you can finally leave your broken down apartment. Both bands deliver great tracks, and this is a 7" I highly recommend.

Auktion - D-Beat Rock 'n' Roll Mayhem

Auktion is a D-beat band from Sweden with a lot of rock n roll elements thrown in. Dual vocals make some sick unique sounds and the solos are great on this album. Mostly high energy feeling, with fast guitar. Most songs in the 1-2.30 minute range. The name pretty much tells you all you need to know about the album. Fucking sick, give it a listen. Unfortunately they are on indefinite hiatus since earlier this year. If you like it, make sure to support them and buy their shit.
